Why Are Coral Reefs Important?

According to The Nature Conservancy, coral reefs are a food source to around 1.2 billion people, they provide flood protection - saving over $270 billion in the process, and they also make a contribution of $36 billion a year to the tourism industry.

Coral reefs support an estimated 25% of all known marine species.

Artificial reefs provide shelter, food and other necessary elements for biodiversity and a productive ocean. This in turn creates a rich diversity of marine life.

Coral reefs have tremendous economic value.

They support fisheries and aquaculture, providing a vital source of food and income for millions of people worldwide. Additionally, they are a cornerstone of the tourism industry, attracting snorkelers, divers, and other tourists.

Coral reefs play a critical role in protecting coastlines.

They act as natural barriers, absorbing the energy of waves and reducing their impact on shorelines. This function protects coastal habitats, reduces the risk of flooding.

Coral reefs are vital for food security, supporting marine species that feed millions globally.

They also offer unique compounds for medical research, potentially aiding in the development of treatments for diseases like cancer.
